Christmas is…
Christmas. The word conjures up many images, some good and some bad. Images of tacky gifts, tackier decorations, and disgusting food may spring to mind at the mere mention of the word; basically a scene straight out of a Christmas nightmare, or the usual Christmas at the Griswold residence. However, with my family Christmas is truly a special occasion.
Gifts. What Christmas would be complete without the joy of gifts? There is an old saying that, “The joy of gifts is in the giving.” Well in my family this is particularly true. The members of my family put much energy into choosing gifts suited for the recipient. Gifts are carefully and thoughtfully wrapped with care and love. When opened, family members are appreciative of the efforts of the giver in choosing a gift. Thanks are sincere and whining is nonexistent. My family also ensures that each year we support a needy family with gifts, food and monetary donations. Gift giving in my family is just part of what makes Christmas special.
Decorations. What Christmas would be complete without the inclusion of a beautifully decorated house? My house is always tastefully and colorfully decorated. There are no tacky inflatable snowman or blinking Santa at my house. Lights are strung from the trees of the yard. A real fresh cut tree is erected in the corner of the living room. The tree is then tastefully decorated with classy decorations of red, green and gold. Not one strand of hideous tinsel touches our beautiful tree. The mantles and nooks are adorned with nice decorations that have been collected over the years. All of these elements combine together to make my house a cornucopia of Christmas taste and cheer.
Food. Finally, what Christmas would be complete without a scrumptious Christmas feast? If there is one thing my family knows how to do it is creating a Christmas feast. The members of my family are good, no great, cooks. No boring dishes are served. No plain side dishes. No over-cooked turkey bought in the markdown aisle of the grocery store. Christmas dinner starts with the turkey. In my family the turkey comes from JD Farms where they raise their free-range birds organically before selling them to you fresh on December 23. Also, the turkey is accompanied by ham to widen the selection of entrees. A wide variety of side dishes are served. Each one a culinary masterpiece, including, roasted garlic and herb mashed potatoes, carrots in ginger and maple syrup sauce, broccoli and cauliflower au gratin, and Brussel sprouts fired with bacon and almond slivers. While I personally do not like Brussel spouts, I do appreciate the effort that we all seem to go to make the dinner special. Of course what meal would be complete without wine? Well not ours. Unique and inspired selections of wine are sought out to pair with the food and enhance its enjoyment. To top off our feast there are always 2 or 2 choices freshly prepared for desert—mmm candy cane cheesecake. The Christmas dinner with my family is what makes Christmas so special with my family.
Christmas. The word Christmas brings could bring a host of images to mind. To some the images may be bad. To other they may be good. For myself the images are always positive. Images of tasteful gifts, beautiful decorations, and delicious food fill my mind. So the next time you are having a horrible time with your Christmas celebration call me. I will set a place for you.
